About Matt Butler
Life-long Angler & Fly-Fishing Guide
Matt began fly fishing at the age of 12. Without anglers in the family to show him the way, he learned largely through observation, experimentation and long hours on the water. That process shaped the way he now guides: explain what is happening, encourage people to think for themselves and allow them to develop confidence through experience.
For more than 20 years, fly fishing has taken Matt across New Zealand’s rivers. For over a decade, he has guided international guests through the South Island’s landscapes and fisheries. Today, Matt lives in Te Anau and guides throughout Fiordland and Southland.
He specialises in sight fishing for wild trout: finding fish in clear water, interpreting their behaviour and working patiently towards the best possible opportunity. But his role extends beyond locating trout. Matt wants guests to feel comfortable, understand what they are doing and enjoy the landscape around them. He is equally at home helping someone make their first cast or working through a technical challenge with a highly experienced angler.
His knowledge of New Zealand also means the conversation often continues beyond the river, from local places and wildlife to suggestions for the rest of a guest’s journey. That human part of the day is why many clients return, and why so many reviews remember Matt as clearly as they remember the fishing.
Matt's Fishing Philosophy
A good day begins with the right river and the right expectations.
From there, it requires attention to the weather, the water and the person standing beside you.
Some days offer many opportunities. Others ask us to work carefully for one. Matt’s responsibility is to bring experience, preparation and judgement to everything that can be influenced, while helping guests appreciate the parts that cannot.
Success might be a remarkable trout brought to the net. It might be a cast that finally comes together or spending a memorable day somewhere few visitors reach. Usually, it is a combination of all of these.
